El problema…
En inglés solamente tenemos un verbo “to be”, pero en español tenemos 2 verbos “to be”:
INGLÉS | ESPAÑOL |
I: am | Yo: soy / estoy |
You: are | Tú: eres / estás o Usted: es / está |
He, She, it: is | Él, Ella, Eso, Esa: es / está |
We: are | Nosotros: somos / estamos |
Y’all: are | Ustedes: son / están |
They: are | Ellos: son / están |
En español tenemos que escoger:
Soy vs Estoy | (I) am |
Eres vs Estás | (You) are |
Es vs Está | (She, He, It) is |
Somos vs Estamos | (We) are |
Sois vs Estáis | (You) are |
Son vs Están | (They) are |
¿Cómo escogemos?¿Cómo elegimos?
Permanent vs Temporary is what you may remember from years back, but it’s not quite complete enough. The permanent vs temporary test will help orient you a little bit to the differences between SER and ESTAR, but it’s pretty UN-helpful in many situations.
For Beginners just getting started with Spanish, here is a simple little rhyme to orient you to the differences between SER & ESTAR:
“Twinkle, Twinkle use ESTAR for how you feel & where you are”
This little rhyme tells you to use the verb ESTAR for feelings (emotions) and location:
- Yo estoy contento con mi trabajo.
- …solamente estoy en WA durante Thanksgiving.
For more advanced Spanish students… tenemos que ser más específicos con el contexto…
SER – “corto”
C: characteristics | Características |
O: occupation | Ocupación |
R: relationship | Relación |
T: time | Tiempo |
O: origin | Origen |
ESTAR – “place”
P: position | Posición |
L: location | Locación |
A: action | Acción |
C: condition | Condición |
E: emotion | Emoción |
“CORTO” para los usos de SER
“PLACE” para los usos de ESTAR
¿Por qué así?
Ahora intenta tú…
