Emergency and Urgent Care Spanish
Spanish immersion built around the communication emergency and urgent care actually demands. Costa Rica and Ecuador, February and July every year.
Emergency medicine is the specialty where language failure costs the most. You are taking a history from someone in distress, often without a chart, often without time. Doing that in Spanish is a skill, and the place to build it is not the first shift where you need it.
This is not a clinical program. You are not placed in a hospital or clinic, and you do not observe or assist in patient care. The patient-facing work here is community health education. You work directly with community members, in Spanish, on health topics those communities identified.
What this program gives you is the language, built deliberately, before you are standing in front of the patient who requires it.
Who This Is For
Medical students considering or committed to emergency medicine, PA students headed for emergency practice, and nurses and NPs working in emergency and urgent care who want usable Spanish.
There is no Spanish minimum. Instruction is set to your level.

Three and four week programs within a four-week block.
What the Program Includes

Documentation of hours and activities.
Medical Spanish instruction, oriented to acute communication
Roughly 20 hours a week at our partner language school. The vocabulary and the drilling are built around what emergency and urgent care require: rapid history taking, pain and symptom description, mechanism of injury, allergies and medications, and speaking with families under stress. Instruction is set to your level.
Community health education
You work with the immersion team delivering health education in underserved communities, on topics those communities identified. Much of it addresses the conditions that turn into emergencies when they go unmanaged.
Host family lodging
One student per household. Living in Spanish is what moves classroom vocabulary into recall speed, and recall speed is the entire point in acute settings.
Why language is the right thing to train here
Everything else about emergency practice you will learn in your own program, under supervision, with the volume of repetition it requires. The one thing your program almost certainly will not give you is Spanish.
A physician who can take a history in Spanish without waiting on an interpreter gets to the answer faster. In a specialty where the whole discipline is compressed decision making, that is not a soft skill.
We are also clear about what we are not offering. Some programs market emergency rotations abroad on the promise of hands-on experience in an unfamiliar system. That is a poor idea on its own terms, and we do not do it.
