Hi Janet, you should have received everything to your email? If you can view the course, then you should have access. Let us know!

  1. Hello! I’m not in medicine but I am an attorney working in disability law and guardianship, and most the people I am working with have some kind of physical, intellectual, or mental disability. I would like to improve my ability to communicate with my clients about how their health issues affect their lives.

  2. Hello, My name is Bayan Abunar. I am an Ob/Gyn in Ohio. I work a federally Qualified Health Center and have >40% spanish speaking population. There are days were 100% of my patients are spanish speaking. I am a beginner. I would like to build a better rapport with my patients and become more efficient in spanish. Ideally would like to be fluid in the next 2-3 years.

    1. ¡Hola, Bayan! 😊
What a great motivation and great setting of goals, we are here to help you!
      ¡Nos vemos el lunes!

  3. I originally learned Spanish at my Philadelphia, PA high school. After graduating, I lived in Valladolid, Spain and worked as a teacher’s assistant at a girls’ prep school. For the last 16 years, I have been a registered nurse volunteer at a local free clinic whose client base is approximately 40% Hispanic. Most of these clients do not speak much English, if at all, and many lack basic health literacy. When I translate for the providers, I not only have to translate into Spanish, but explain “medicalese” into something understandable. My 2 main goals are to expand my vocabulary and improve my pronunciation.

    1. ¡Hola, Michele!
Pretty interesting connection you have with Spanish! Great goals, we are here to help you!
      ¡Nos vemos el lunes!

  4. Victoria Trochimowicz

Hi! While I speak basic Spanish and can communicate in general, I want to have the confidence to speak with my patients who speak little to no English about their medical issues. It is my goal to make sure they feel as comfortable as possible!

    1. Alexandra MacPhee

¡Hola Victoria y mucho gusto! That’s great that you have the opportunity to use your Spanish and serve your patients better. I am sure the Crash Course will help you set objectives for learning to continue making your patients as comfortable as possible!

  5. Hi, I m very pleased to be a part of this training. Thank you for what you do.

I’m here because I have many Spanish-only or limited English friends. I communicate with them using Google translate. Not exactly HIPPA compliant for my patients.

I have had two Spanish-only friends who almost died because they could not communicate with thier health care providers. If I had not advocate for my friend she would have bled to death. If my other friend had not advocate for her Father-in-law, he would have signed for hospice care, not understanding what that meant.

I am studying to be a Radiology Technologist and I want to be able to speak to my patients to give them the best healthcare I can, and prevent a similar tragedy from happening.

    1. Alexandra MacPhee

¡Hola Shondell! Wow! Those experiences definitely show how important it can be to serve communities better by learning some of the language. It sounds like you’ve got great motivations and will gain a lot from this course and the CGI community. ¡Nos vemos en la clase!

  6. Hola, my name is Lolita. I have taken Spanish several times without much success with retention. My patient population is 85% Spanish speaking and I want to make an effort to communicate better with them.

    1. ¡Hola, Lolita!
Don’t worry! You have a great motivation and we want to help you achieve your goals!
      ¡Nos vemos pronto!

  9. Bridgett Chandler

Hola! I’m a doctor of nursing practice with a growing number of Spanish speaking people in our family practice clinic. I’m a beginner with some classes and lots of Duolingo! 😉

    1. Alexandra MacPhee

¡Excelente Bridgett! Sounds like you’ve got some great motivation to learn Spanish! Duolingo is certainly a helpful resource, but hopefully we can ramp up your medical vocab with the Crash Course!

  10. Toni Soward-Gatford

  11. Hola, me llamo Pearl.

    1. Alexandra MacPhee

¡Hola Pearl y mucho gusto! Parece que tienes un buen nivel de español y claro que aprenderás muchas cosas nuevas en este curso. ¡Nos vemos en la clase!

  12. Darcy Trowbridge

    Hi I’m Darcy-
I’m an RN, worked 10 years in Palm Springs and picked up bits of medical Spanish. I’d really like to be more proficient in order to help understand my patients! Can’t wait 🙂

    1. ¡Hola, Darcy! We are here to help you to communicate better with your patients. 😊 See you tomorrow! 🙌🏽

  13. I am registered for this course because I have put “become bilingual” on my vision board for two years and this is the start of me honoring my goals.
I want to be able to communicate with my patients and clients to make sure they understand what is about to be done ad what they are signing. Also I would really like to engage those in my community .
I want to become more familiar with medical/legal jargon and be able to explain to my patients and clients. Also I want to be able to conversate when i travel for work and pleasure,

    1. ¡Hola, Miranda! Great vision board!! 🙌🏽 It’s very important that patients understand what is going on, and we want to help you to feel confident when talking to your patients. See you tomorrow! 😊

  14. Sarah-Jane Rudd

I am a medical student in California. I will begin my clinical rotations in a few months. Knowing I won’t be perfect, I hope to start learning and practicing speaking Spanish with my patients to improve their experience with me and their medical team.

    1. ¡Hola, Sarah-Jane! 😊 It’s a great idea to start practicing and we’ll give you the tools you need to achieve your goals! See you tomorrow!😊

  15. Hi,
Once again I am making a foray into becoming fluent in Spanish. I am now doing it in a more consistent manner to immerse myself in the spoken language in and on different media i.e. music streams, empesora, local Spanish radio stations and different print media as has been frequently suggested. I want to enjoy communicating in Spanish for work and for fun.

  16. Mariano Morales Jr

Hola, mi nombre es Mariano y soy Tecnólogo en Cardiología Nuclear jubilado. I am currently serving as a Medical Spanish Interpreter for various doctor’s offices, clinics, and hospitals. Born and raised in the United States, speaking/learning Spanish has always been difficult for me despite my Spanish background. But, thankfully through perseverance and hard work, I have gotten to the point where I am comfortable and proficient enough to translate effectively.
The reason I registered for this crash medical course is because I am always looking for better ways to improve my craft and to never be afraid to push past my boundaries/comfort level. I want to thank everyone involved (teachers/participants) for this great opportunity.

    1. Alexandra MacPhee

¡Hola Mariano! Qué interesante experiencia, siempre es tan importante seguir aprendiendo. We’re happy to have you in the Course!

  17. Why: To be able to communicate with my patients and their parents effectively. To provide a safe medical home where they are understood and can connect 1 on 1 with their provider.

What: Improve vocabulary, work on ability to communicate instructions and recommendations clearly, work on my listening comprehension, improve my cultural competency (cultural beliefs and understandings around medicine and the medical system, home remedies, wholistic/spiritual beliefs that impact my care, appropriate ways to address and interact with and address parents, elders, children)

    1. Alexandra MacPhee

¡Hola Finnain! Excellent motivations and sounds like you know very well what it is you need to learn! Also, very interesting focus!

  18. Hello, I really appreciate your youtube videos and have learned a lot.
I want to improve my Spanish medical terminology and comprension.

  19. I have taken part of the Medical Spanish offerings from CGI but need a review and have time this week and next to do so. Thanks.

  20. Dustin Mcconnell

Soy bibliotecario en una escuela de spanish inmersion y quisiera mejorar— me parece buen opurtunidad para advanzar y preperarme!

  21. Hello!

My name is Joselyn and I am a second year PA student. I studied Spanish in college and even traveled to Ecuador for a study abroad trip for 2 months. However, since graduating, I l haven’t practiced and feel like I’ve lost a lot of my speaking abilities. I’m hoping this course pushes me to start reviewing Spanish again to use in my future career.

  23. LINDA GREGERSEN

Hi! I am not in the medical field, but I speak Spanish and am going to be working with a non-profit in Peru that will offer medical services for humans and also animals, so I figured this will be a good way to learn the vocabulary I will need!

  24. Adrienne Richards

I am a school nurse in Washington. We only have a few Spanish speaking students/families in my school but I would love to be more comfortable with talking to them. I took Spanish in college and even spent a few weeks on a medical mission trip in Guatemala but those were years ago and I miss speaking the language.

    1. ¡Hola, Adrienne! 🙌🏽
Welcome! Spanish is a beautiful language to speak! What a great opportunity for you to refresh what you already know and take it to the next level! ¡Nos vemos pronto!😊

  25. I’m an NP student. For my final year starting this August, my practicum hours will be at a site where many patients are Spanish-speaking and most of the providers are bilingual. I can understand some, and speak a little, but I have a lot of room to grow. I want to be able to keep up! After I graduate, I’d love to work in my local community, which is primarily Spanish-speaking. I often think, how can you claim to care for someone, when you can’t even explain to them that you care? It’s time for me to buckle down and learn how to communicate with my patients. Looking forward to this crash course!

    1. We’re so glad you found the Crash Course Katherine… love your perspective and we’re excited to help you connect with your Spanish speaking patients :). ¡Hasta pronto!

      1. Hey Rory,
Life kinda got in the way and I wasn’t able to put in the time I wanted to for this crash course. I’m planning on signing up for an immersion trip and would love to do a crash course before the June trip. Will there be any more crash courses like this before then? Thank you.

        1. Hey Brad, I saw your Spanish Immersion registration come through – welcome ! We won’t have a Medical Spanish Crash Course before your summer trip. But we will be offering some other language help via our travel Spanish course. Stay tuned :).

  26. Patricia Marie Romo

I am so happy you have this course. I am a 4th semester nursing student and I am looking forward to learning with you all!

  27. I am a nurse and although we have people at the clinic where I work who can translate, I find it would be easier, better for me to not have a middle man interpreting what I need, plus I can build better rapport with the patients. I also think it is always good to learn and we never stop learning,

  28. I am a nurse midwife. My practice covers mostly prenatal care and labor and delivery but I also do some gynecologic care.

    1. Alexandra MacPhee

¡Bienvenida Adriene y mucho gusto! I’m sure this course will help you with some basic communications! Sounds like a great reason to learn Spanish!

  29. Hello,
Thank you for offering this class. I am currently a Medical Coder, but have enrolled in a Medical assistance class. I would like to learn Spanish to be able to communicate with Spanish speaking patients so that I can earn their confidence and obtain a better overall patient outcome.

    1. Hello, my name is Marcia and I’m a nurse practitioner in California. Many of my patients are Spanish-speaking and it is important for me to communicate with them in the language they feel most comfortable using. I also look forward to improving my medical Spanish because I’m currently learning with an app and this is not an area that is covered.

    2. Thank you so much for offering this course.

  30. Buenas tardes! I am a charge nurse in labor and delivery that has many Spanish speaking patients. I have a basic knowledge of conversational Spanish, but would like more clinical language that is specific to my area of nursing. Therefore, when we have a patient come in and we need quick information about their clinical status, I can ask those questions until the interpreter arrives. I also truly enjoy this patient population and would love to be able to communicate more with them. They really do appreciate it.

  31. I am an outpatient pediatric SLP, and I studied Spanish while completing coursework in Guatemala and Spain. Lately, I have not had much practice and am thankful to have found this class! My population of Spanish-speaking families is quickly growing, and I hope to continue refining my Spanish skills to provide them with the best care.

    1. Hi, I am a physical therapist and work with families that Speak Spanish. I am excited to learn more Spanish! Thank you for offering this course.

  32. Jessica Gutierrez-Arnold

    Hello everyone!
I work in a hospital dentistry setting and am here to improve my medical Spanish vocabulary. I look forward to learning with you all!

  33. Hola. I am a women’s health provider at a community health clinic in Denver, CO. . I provide care for a large number of Spanish speaking persons. I’ve been picking up phrases along the way but I want to improve my skills and not rely on the interpreter during visits. I enjoy learning other languages but it is hard to find courses that can fit into my busy work schedule. I’ve heard lots of really good feedback about CGI! Excited for this course.

  34. Hi! My name is April and I’m a Cardiac Stepdown Travel RN. I would like to learn more Spanish to be able to communicate better with my Spanish speaking patients. It’s very frustrating to have to “hunt down” a language line or translation tablet when I can spend that time talking with my patients and developing a trusting and therapeutic relationship. I’ve been wanting to be more functionally fluent for some time now and I’m hoping this will jumpstart my goal towards achieving fluency.

  35. Buenos Días!

I have a Spanish speaking background but I am limited in vocabulary and confidence in speaking fluently. I will be taking classes for a medical assistant program and would like to simultaneously build my medical Spanish vocabulary so that I might pair the two together in my work goals.

  36. Hola!

I registered for this crash course to help my understanding of Spanish in the medical field. I feel that completing this course will benefit me in many ways and I am all about setting myself up for success. I want to work on learning different medical Spanish terms and understanding Spanish. I would also like to work on my Spanish speaking skills.

    1. Hola!

I work as a medical scribe right now, and play in several Hispanic soccer leagues. I’d like to improve my clinical Spanish so I can communicate with patients better.

  37. Hello! I am a senior in high school who is getting ready to graduate in May and my plan after graduation is to go to nursing school. I am talking this class to help me grow in the medical field so that I can help more people in the community. My goal is to learn more Spanish words and phrases that pertain to the medical field.

  38. I took a live course with CGI several years ago in Denver that allowed me to begin building confidence in simple Spanish interactions with my patients. As an ER it’s great to be able to make a small introduction in Spanish and get a very basic focused assessment from my patients before bringing in the video interpreter, and it helps to build trust. I’m looking forward to adding to my vocabulary and having a chance to practice!

  39. Hello,

I am a paramedic out of an ER in Burleson, TX and I want to see if there is a faster way to learn to speak with our Spanish-speaking patients that come in every day. Duolingo takes too long to get to anything useful.

    Thank you,

    David

  40. Hello! I’m a new FNP in Kansas and would like to become fluent in Spanish to assist with gathering medical history from patients . I do understand some Spanish but speaking is a challenge for me. Appreciate you offering this free course !

  41. I am a Family NP. I do locums assignment and more of the position are now requiring bilingual Spanish and English. I currently need and interpreter when with a patient that speaks Spanish. I would really like to be able to walk into the exam room and complete a visit without the help of an interpreter. I think this course will give me the ability to feel confident to be able to have a real conversation with a patient who is Spanish speaking.

  42. Hello Everyone!

I am a new FNP in San Diego, which has a large Spanish speaking population, looking to improve my skills. So happy this class is available for medical professionals.

    1. Angelee✨ Almendarez

      Hello everyone!

I am currently a chiropractic intern in the DFW area. My goal is to become more comfortable with medical Spanish so that I may extend my services to those who have never experienced the benefits of chiropractic care.

    2. Hi, I am a physical therapist and work with families that Speak Spanish. I am excited to learn more Spanish! Thank you for offering this course.

  43. Hi, I was wondering when and how we will receive our CEU’s for completing this course. When I go to ‘my account’ and my ‘registered courses’ it says I wasn’t registered for this masterclass but I was and I completed the course. Please let me know how I can get my CEU. Thank you!

  44. Alexandria Steele

I missed the window to obtain the blueprint due to work, is there any way I can receive the course work and info for lessons 3 and 4? I already have lessons 1 & 2. Thank you!

  45. Thank you for offering this class. I am having trouble being able to click on the recorded lessons and I am registered, but when I am on the course page it says I am not registered. Please help! Thank you!

  46. I am intermediate in my spanish. We didn’t get a chance to exchange contact information in my group in the first class.I don’t have facebook. How can I connect with someone to practice spanish?
    Thanks,
    Terry

  47. Hola,

Espero que todo vaya bien! No fui al reunion anoche. Tiene alguno grabacion de video del reunion? Si tienes, de donde puedo acceso el video? Muchismas gracias y tenga un buen dia!

  48. I am registered and receiving emails. I’m logged in and see the course listed, however, I cannot view lesson one. It keeps asking for my information again as if I’m not already registered. What gives? Is this how all of your courses work?

    1. Hi Susan, sorry for the problems you’re having with the course this morning. Obviously there’s a little glitch somewhere and no this isn’t how our courses are supposed to work… It sounds to me like a browser caching issue. Browsers use caching to speed up your experience online. Here is a link to show you how to clear your browser cache if you’re not familiar with that process. If you clear your browser cache (or login on an incognito window, or simply try from a different browser) you should be able to login and access the lesson as its intended to be accessed. I’ll email you as well to make sure you see this. Hope to see you online Thursday night for our second live class! Sincerely, Rory.

  49. Hello from Canada. Thank-you so much for offering this course! I recently joined Parceros spanishland and learned about it after listening to the españolistas podcast. I am not sure I will be able to make all the classes but I appreciate the opportunity to gain some new vocabulary. I used to be a nurse and although I no longer work in the field, we plan to live in Mexico for part of the year. and I may be interested in volunteering. Also we have Spanish speaking friends there that have asked me for nursing help in the past and although my Spanish is getting better, as far as medical Spanish I have a hard time past “Tienes fiebre? or “Tomaste tu medicina? ect. Thank-you!

    1. Alexandra MacPhee

Hola Sarah! Mucho gusto! Sounds like you have great motivations. I’m sure you’ll learn a lot more in tomorrow’s Masterclass live session!

  50. Anita Hoogendoorn

Listening to Andrea from Spanishland I learned about the Medical Spanish course. Since I am a midwife from the Netherlands I don’t think that I can join the live lessons. The time is in the middle of our night. My dream is to work as a volunteer in one of the Spanish speaking countries of South-America. I am eager to start and learn. Thank you for making this possible.

    1. Stephanie Beltrán

Thank you Anita! That’s an amazing goal! We wish you a lot of success in your Spanish learning journey!

    1. Hi Christina, it will say it’s closed if you’re not logged in. Try logging in with your username that was sent to you when you registered and you’ll be all set!

Quiero mejorarme.

  52. I am a Licensed Creative arts therapist in a behavioral Health hospital setting, and although art, dance and music can transcend language barriers, I want to be more effective as a clinician. I don’t really know any medical terms in Spanish and have relied on my student exchange experience in Spain as a high schooler. Ultimately, I want to feel confident that I am completely understanding the client and his/her needs.

  53. Hello, all,
I am excited to take this Spanish class. I have been learning Spanish for quite some time, but have not delved into the medical aspect of it. I am looking forward to putting what I learn into practice.

  54. Hola!
I am a hospitalist and primary care nurse practitioner who also attends medical mission trips to Honduras. My goal is to secure a practice platform to learn and maintain Spanish on a regular basis. I would like to find a long term mission assignment in a clinic in South America to address the needs of underserved populations. Acquiring the language would be the icing on the cake!

    1. Stephanie Beltrán

Amazing work you’re doing Teresa! We wish you lots of success in your Spanish learning journey! Nos vemos en la clase pronto!

  55. Hi Rory,
I learned about your class from Andrea at Spanishland. I am a primary care physician in Florida and have a lot of Spanish speaking patients. I am excited to be in this class to be able to be fluent in speaking to my patients well. It helps to connect with them truly at this level. Thanks so much for creating this. Glad to be here!!

  56. Hola Rory…hola Leslie!
I learned about this course through my involvement with your recent Medical Spanish Immersion trip to Ecuador this past June.. What an amazing experience that was! Living with a host family and being forced to speak the language was super helpful in my language progression. I have to be honest….I have not my practiced my Spanish as much as I would have liked since returning….but ready to get back to it! 😊

    1. Stephanie Beltrán

Amazing Tanya! 👍🏼 We’re glad you loved the experience! Yes, keep practicing 😉 ¡Nos vemos pronto!

  57. Dana George-Ormsby

    Hello.
I am a RN currently working Postpartum/Couplet care unit. We get a lot of Spanish speaking patients. We have a great video interpreter service but it is time consuming to log on to ask a simple question. I am taking this class to better communicate with my patients in a timelier manner.

  58. Hello everyone! I am a newly licensed LVN, I was an EMT in the Greater Los Angeles for five years. I recently completed a month long intensive Spanish immersion program in Costa Rica. I goal is that by participating in this program I will not only be able to improve my communication with Spanish speaking individuals but my confidence in delivering a high level of care.

  59. Michelle Lesser

I found this course recommended through a Google search. I’m a Hospitalist PA working in a predominantly Spanish speaking hospital. My 2 years of high school Spanish barely gets me the basics. I’m looking forward to expanding my vocabulary, improving my grammar, and hopefully increasing my comprehension as well. Thanks!

  60. Kimberly Harris

Hello! I have been a Nurse Practitioner for 10 years and have many patients that speak Spanish. I have been studying Spanish for a few years but really need to focus on the medical angle. Thanks for having this class!

  61. Gracias por la clase! Soy asistente de fisioterapeuta. Quiero comunicar con mi pacientes sobre los ejercicios, partes del cuerpo, postura, palabras y frases para dolor, y los movimientos.

  62. Katherine Strong

Hello, I am a Labor & Delivery nurse looking to better serve my Spanish-speaking patients since recently relocating to an area where they are a significant proportion of our population. I hope to gain practice with medical vocabulary and increase my confidence in communicating with patients and their families at the bedside.

  63. Jeanette Wiedenhoeft

Good morning!! I’m a Certified Medical Assistant working in a largely Spanish speaking community. While I do use our interpreter services, I am hoping to be of more assistance for my patients by participating in this course!
Oddly, I seem to understand more Spanish than I can speak!

    1. Stephanie Beltrán

That’s usually the first thing we seem to develop way faster! But with practice and just speaking without thinking too much about it, it all gets much easier!

  64. Hello! I learned about your program from SpanishLand School. I have always wanted to improve my Spanish but now more than ever since getting into healthcare. I’m a Registered Nurse living in South Florida. I want to be able to provide better care to my patients and not have to hunt down a language translation phone line or a Spanish speaking nurse. I want my Spanish speaking patients to feel comfortable with me and I just want to be able to communicate in Spanish. I’m looking forward to this Masterclass and joining one of the Immersion trips next year. Thank you!

  65. Hola Rory! Estoy apasionada por aprender vocabulario relacionado con el ambito medical. Si yo tenga oportunidad de mejorar esta habilidad, me gustaria ser una traductora /interprete medica.

  66. Hi!
I met Leslie through a Zoom call for the graduating students in the Westmont Spanish Department. I’m currently at CMU for a masters program in translation and am looking for more tools to add to my language kit!
Thank you for hosting this! (Especially for grad students who don’t have any money but want so badly to learn :))

    Rick

  68. Karen Lee-Duffell

Hi, also heard about this through Andrea at Spanishland. I’m a labor and delivery RN and have many Spanish-speaking patients. I’m half cuban but did not learn it as a child, was just around it a lot. After spanish classes in high school, doing an exchange program in Spain age 17, and now as a 40 year old nurse spending my own time working on it, I speak well enough to get through triaging, admitting and delivering uncomplicated patients who are willing to slow down and be patient with me…. but the complicated cases are harder for me. I want to improve the level of care these patients receive and reduce miscommunication and difficulty.

  69. I heard about your offering through Andrea at SpanishLand School. I am an EMT, and more than once I’ve had to rely on my old high school Spanish class skills to help calm an anxious parent of a pediatric trauma patient, or differentiate between a cardiac patient that needs a helicopter ride or just has gastric reflux and can skip the $30k helivac. I’m hoping your course can take me a bit further on the journey to effectively communicate in these situations.

  70. Hola, I’m a retired ESL teacher and have been volunteering as an interpreter for a local health clinic for unserved Spanish speakers in St. Paul for several years. I’d love to improve my listening comprehension and speaking skills so I was happy to listen to the Espanolistos podcast today and Andrea sent me the link. Thanks so much for offering me this opportunity!

  71. I heard about your class through Spanishland School Podcast. I practice Telemedicine as an internist and many patients are Spanish Speakers. I conduct consultations but if things get complicated or if patients speak rapidly and not clearly it becomes awkward. I am looking forward to practice when not under pressure.

    1. Awesome Jaimy, we’re glad you found the Masterclass for a low-pressure practice opportunity. Telemedicine is particularly hard without being present in the room, but improving your medical Spanish will definitely help with your comprehension and having the precise words for more complicated cases. See you online!

  72. Hello! I am a pediatric nurse practitioner in an underserved community health center in Baltimore. I am taking this course to pass my health center’s bilingual proficiency exam. I was 2 points away from passing and want to be sure I can pass the second try!

  73. Hi, I’m a pediatric oncology fellow relatively competent in medical spanish and have a good vocabulary for my specialty but want additional practice (especially auditory practice) to ensure I can pass my hospital’s bilingual provider certification test.

  74. I registered as I take care of home care patients who speak Spanish and I like to surprise them when I understand them.

  75. Janet.Zimlinghaus

    Hello,
I am an RN and currently working on my FNP. My goal is to learn medical Spanish to improve my communication with patients who speak Spanish.

    1. Alexandra MacPhee

Welcome Janet! Suena como una buena meta! That sounds like a great goal! I’m sure with this class you’ll be able to serve your patients better.

  76. I’ve stalled out in progress with Spanish, Hablo un poco, per- no confidence, and just enough to maybe get a visit started but not get all the details. Good interpreters have kind of spoiled
    me!!

      1. ¡Hola Donnica! 😊
Tienes la actitud perfecta para avanzar… ¡seguir intentando hasta lograrlo! And you will! 👏🏽

  77. Gabriela Al-Shamma

Wow this is super inspiring to see so many others in the field working on their Spanish! I’m an new ICU RN here in Denver and would just really love to be able to comfort my patients and their families in Spanish (when applicable).

    1. Stephanie Beltrán

Bienvenida Gabriela, glad you are here! 😊👋🏼 You will benefit a lot from this course, see you in class!

  78. I’m a family medicine resident in CA, 85% of my patients are Spanish – speaking only. I’d like to be able to get through most clinical encounters without using an interpreter. I’m about 50% there by learning on the fly. But I’m looking forward to taking my Spanish skills to the next step! I’ll miss the zoom sessions because I’m on night shift, but will catch up later as I can. Thanks!

    1. Alexandra MacPhee

Bienvenida Elaine! Gracias por el comentario. I’m sure you will gain a lot of the class. It seems like you have excelente motivations to improve your Spanish!

  79. I am a Labor and delivery nurse in Nogales< Arizona.
I would like to be able to find out valuable information while caring for them

  80. I am an LMSW working in an FQHC in NYC. My most common types of Pt’s suffer from Anxiety or Depression, or both. Regardless I registered b/c I am sure I would learn new things. So far it has been helpful to learn the difference between lo/la and le/te – also, how to use the scaling question….even to learn OLDCARTS. Thank you! PS – I also found the “La depresion y la ansiedad” PP and looking that over!

    1. Stephanie Beltrán

Welcome Maria! 👋🏼 We are glad you are here! 😊 This course will give you tools and more vocabulary to communicate with your patients. 😉

  81. Kelley Laughlin

Hello! I have taught high school Spanish for 16 years. Before that I worked as a bilingual family case manager and did some interpreting, but it was almost all maternal /child health related. I’ve done some medical interpreting since then, but in March, we will be going to Cuba with a team doing orthopedic surgery. My job will be to interpret for the initial history and physical exam.

  82. I’m a Physician Assistant originally from California but currently living in Massachusetts. I’m planning on heading back to SoCal within the next year and want to make myself more competitive as a provider in the area and allow me to help a broader patient population.

  83. Donnica Harry-Waddell

Hi… honestly . I was so confused at the beginning but I think there us much to learn. I am a Medical Social Worker assigned to Oncology. Our clients do have presenting problems which sometimes border on Social support, options of care after discharge, financial status, etc. I hope that this course would help me to I teract with my clients better to identify what their presenting problems are and readily work out care plans with them that tailor to their unique needs. Thank you so much Rory and Lesile. Happy new year

    1. Stephanie Beltrán

¡Feliz Año Nuevo Donnica! 😊✨ That’s excellent! Yes, the course will help you and give you guidelines to interact with your patients. 😉

  84. I really need more help with conversing with my Spanish speaking patients. This class was a great opportunity

  85. Brittany Perzia

Thank you so much for offering this class for free. I am a resident physician, and I could really use this knowledge to improve my care for Spanish-speaking patients. I hope this will also help reduce the anxiety I experience when I encounter these patients.

      1. Kelley Lynn Laughlin

Hello! I have taught high school Spanish for 16 years. Before that I worked as a bilingual family case manager and did some interpreting, but it was almost all maternal /child health related. 86. I am an elementary school nurse and my goal is to refresh my memory on basic Spanish pronunciation and to be able to ask students simple questions if they come into my healthroom without another student to help translate. It has been over 40 years since I have taken a Spanish class and although I have been around Spanish speakers I am a little rusty.
This course was recommended by our ESOL teacher.

  87. Hi,

I am fluent in Spanish but need to improve my medical terminology in Spanish. How effective will this course be for me since I am able to functionally communicate in Spanish?

    Thanks!

  88. Hi – two questions:
    1. Verb forms: it seem that the ‘we’ forms are all identical regardless of past/present/future tense? for example ‘we speak’ = hablamos, and ‘we spoke’ = hablamos? Is this true and how would one know in conversation which form we mean?

    2. Will the video lectures be available to view after the masterclass has finished next week?

    Thank you,
    Alicen

    1. Good observation Alicen. It’s partially accurate. The present tense and preterite past tenses have the same conjugation for WE with -ar verbs. So, yes context is the only way you would be able to tell “hablamos = we speak” apart from “hablamos = we spoke”. Words like: “ayer”, “ya” , “esta mañana” and other time markers are the context clues that help you know if it’s a past tense or present tense.

  89. As a response to Karyn Dundorf’s comments, I wanted to say I have always called Tampons : (tampones) But sometimes when you look for a translation for a word on google translate they don’t have ones for certain words.

        1. Hola!
My name’s Victoria. I currently work as a medical scribe & I’m finishing up master’s in medical pharmacology & physiology. My goal is to become a physician assistant one day. I interact with a lot of Hispanic patients & the translation services available vary widely from facility to facility. I’d like to be able to interact with patients and explain medical updates to them in their own language, as well as answer their questions.

      1. Hola Rory, Como estas? Ya me gradue de el Spanish Masterclass y no se si ustedes proveen un Certificado de Finalizacion. Si por favor me puedes dejar saber donde lo puedo soliciatar. Gracias, Sonia M Agosto

  90. I am an ER nurse studying to be a Family Nurse Practitioner. I used to speak a lot of Spanish at work until about 10 years ago when we were told we were not allowed to unless we were a certified interpreter. Coworkers who grew up speaking Spanish could not pass the certification test so I just stopped speaking Spanish to all of my patients. Now I am taking clinical classes in and much of my patients will be primarily Spanish speaking. I need to be able to communicate with them without an interpreter.

    1. So glad you found us Elizabeth. Yes some systems are VERY hands off when it comes to Spanish. It’s usually a decision made by legal. We advocate for responsible communication, knowing your limits, and getting language help when you need it. Welcome to the Masterclass!

  91. I am a speech-language pathologist and see Spanish speaking patients regularly in a hospital and outpatient setting. I used to live in Ecuador after college and at one point in my life was near fluent. However, I feel my Spanish is declining and I need more practice! Hoping this will motivate me to do so. Here are my top 3 patients:
    1. 80 year old woman with difficulty swallowing due to GERD and choking with solids
    2. 60 year old female s/p CVA with cognitive impairments and dysarthria
    3. 70 year old male with mild cognitive impairment who is no longer able to drive or manage own medications.

  92. I have Spanish speaking patients all the time and it’s frustrating for everyone when the communication isn’t there, plus important things can get missed. We have a video interpreter which is great but I would feel a lot more comfortable asking assessment questions myself.
I have very basic Spanish knowledge and would like to work on simple ways to ask patients questions but also to be able to understand their response.

  93. I work in the Bronx with many Spanish-speaking patients, and I wanted to learn Medical Spanish to better communicate with my patients.

  94. I took Spanish for 2 years in high school, but that was over 20 years ago. I have been in the healthcare industry since 1989, and I’m currently a RN, I can pick some words in a conversation and try to communicate with my patients but I want to better.

  95. I am a practicing physician in Texas so I regularly encounter Spanish speaking patients. We have ready access to medical interpreters but I have been working on improving my vocab and conversational fluency during the pandemic. I also really enjoy travel and as Spanish is the official language of many many destinations, I hope to use my learnings for fun and cultural exchange too.

      1. I lived in south Florida off and on almost 30 years, still never learned. In my current practice we have alot of migrant workers who only speak Spanish that we care for. I really need to be able to communicate!

  96. I feel pretty comfortable with my spanish but asways feel I can brush on my medical terms in spanish to better assist the patients I work with.

  97. I’m a physician assistant that will be working in a population of Spanish speaking patients next year! I would like to become more comfortable with obtaining a history and physical exam, as well as providing basic patient education. Looking forward to learning with you all!

    1. Awesome Katherine! The opportunity to have regular exposure to Spanish will be great for you as you start your new job! This fall is the perfect time to brush the cobwebs off your Spanish and lay some new and improved foundation for working with your patients. See you online!

  98. I’m a new graduate FNP about to start working in an underserved clinic with many Spanish-speakers. I want to be able to communicate with my patients and form a bond without relying on an interpreter!

    1. Double congratulations Meg! Congrats on finishing your FNP program … and Congrats for landing a job! Glad you found us and we’re excited to work with you in the Masterclass. See you online

  99. Michelle Jackson

Hi, I am a FNP and I am working in an under privilege area and predominately Spanish in urgent care and I am using a language line. I find ut time consuming and frustrating understanding my patients and have them understand my concern for their health and well being. I have always wanted to learn Spanish and your teachings are medical focus and I can watch them anytime which is what I need! Thank you!!

  100. I registered because I love speaking Spanish and I would love to be a medical interpreter and help my mom who is a nurse learn more about Spanish for her patients. I would like to improve my precessional Spanish speaking and of course my vocabulary for medical terms.

  101. I am a Family Nurse Practitioner about to start working in an underprivileged community. Most of the patients speak predominantly Spanish and I was unable to get a full time position because I am not able to communicate without a translator

  102. Hi Rory and Leslie!
I’m back for more! I decided to revisit the beginner Mastering Medical Spanish class to re-enforce the grammar skills before moving to the next level. Looking forward to next week!
    Lauren
    😀

  103. Hi there! I’ve been studying and practicing Spanish for many years (even lived in Costa Rica for three years until last month) and my goal is to become a medical interpreter. I am truly passionate about the language and healthcare. I am hopeful that this class will help me to become more confident in the language and use everything that I will learn in this course to aid me closer to getting an interpreter license in the near future. I am excited for this new challenge!

  104. christine barbato

Hi! I am super late to the party! I really love your learning platform and the interaction with you and the Mrs. With my busy schedule, I try whenever I can to watch your Youtube videos and I was really looking forward to this preview master class. I started a new job last week so I had signed up for the preview class with the intent of saving material and reviewing this week. I am logged in, but am unable to access any of the content from the three lessons nor the recorded live sessions

    estoy triste:(
    Christine
PS I look foward to an immersion trip to Costa Rica when this Covid is over!

    1. Congrats on the new job Christine! We did have to shut down the free masterclass…but it will be back! Shoot me an email and we’ll work something out :).

And yes – we’re excited about medical Spanish immersion again as well. We’re taking steps right now to get our ducks in a row for summer ’21 starting June 26th. And we hope to get back onto our regular February & July schedule full steam in ’22.

  105. I’m super late to the party, but I’m a certified nurse midwife and women’s health nurse practitioner. I will be working in an area that sees a large population of Spanish-speaking patients. I’m hoping to learn Spanish to be able to better strength the relationship I develop with them throughout their pregnancies and during their labor and birth. Thank you for this course. I will look for more of your courses in the future as well.

  106. Hi I am a Nurse Practitioner. Studied abroad in Cuernavaca and Guadalajara Mexico in 1994. Went to Guatemala on a nursing medical missions trip in 1997 and finished up a BA with emphasis in Spanish in 1999 after I did a summer internship abroad in Venezuela working in a hospital. My study was so long ago and I barely get to use my Spanish I have been a nurse for 22 years and a nurse practitioner for 14 years. I would really like to be able to communicate better with my Spanish speaking patients rather than rely on the interpreter phones. I think I second guess myself a lot. Looking to be more confident and fluid!! Thanks

    1. Welcome to the Masterclass Narin! With your exposure and history with Spanish, you’re going to make great strides! Take your time to work through the masterclass lessons over the next few days and the weekend! Cheers,

  107. Hola a todos! I’m Gaby and I’m a register nurse. Even though I completed the healthcare interpretation for healthcare workers program in college a couple years ago I’ve become a little rusty which is why I’m here!

  108. Sarah Pfefferle

¡Saludos a todos! I am Sarah, SpanishEnglish Interpreter/Translator, usually legal or schools, …but recently work is scarce. I am struggling to keep abreast of my language level. I have always been interested in stepping into medical, but my linguistic confidence is dropping. I appreciate the encouragement and acknowledgement of imperfection being perfectly human – it allows for growth through error. Although I missed Tuesday’s Opening Class, I will be there tonight – Thursday.
    Thank you kindly for this.

    1. Welcome Sarah! So glad you’re joining us in the Masterclass! Yes it’s refreshing to cut yourself some slack… not just with language – in most areas of life :). See you tonight!

  109. I’m a language teacher — of both English and Spanish — not a medical professional/healthcare worker. Some of my Spanish students are in the medical field, and they’ve asked me about specific vocabulary and usage for their specific needs at work. I plan to encourage these students to enroll in your Medical Spanish Masterclass, and to supplement the lessons with my own classes. Hoping they can still register at any point during the entire course.

  110. I’m a WHNP and want to improve my limited Spanish for my patients. It’s been a goal for some time, hoping 2021 is the year of competency and improved communication in Spanish.

  111. Hi my name is Kadie and I am a L&D nurse. I don’t encounter a ton of Spanish speaking patients but I would like to learn some basic terms that I can use to take care of Spanish speaking patients adequately.

  112. I’m not officially a healthcare employee. I work in Child Welfare. There are times I need to know medical terminology, and I need to complete interviews and get social history on my families. I have to check in with the family’s primary physicians, confirm immunizations are up to date, and sometimes ask medical questions of family’s whose first language is Spanish. I have taken Spanish in the past – Junior High and High School, and maybe one class in college. I just hope to get anything I can out of this course, practice my Spanish speaking (faster and without having to think so much about it – that will take time), and hopefully find many overlapping areas between the medical Spanish and child welfare area. Thank you!

  113. I work as a registered nurse at a local hospital. I have the opportunity to utilize Spanish every shift. I feel like you can’t practice enough. Leslie and Rory Foster with Common Ground International are amazing. I’ve taken classes with them years ago, in addition to traveling to Costa Rica on a Spanish immersion trip. I’m looking forward to this master class. ¡Gracias!

  114. Suzannah Pessagno

I work at the front desk of a bilingual, free and charitable clinic in the United States. I would like to be more understanding of pts describing their sx over the phone and then respond more correctly/professionally to them when asking for clarification to forward their questions appropriately or schedule the necessary appointment.

  115. Hi! I’m Jacqueline and I’m a certified nurse midwife. I studied Spanish in college and did some volunteer work in Mexico. I’ve used Spanish off and on throughout my career as a nurse and CNM and I’m always looking for ways I can improve to help serve my patients better. I would like to improve my vocabulary so that I’m using the most appropriate words in my conversations with patients, not just something good enough to get by. Thank you so much for doing this!

  116. Hi all! I passed the written medical interpreters exam nit to long ago. I am looking forward to practicing as I am preparing to take the second part of the assessment which is oral. I have to admit that I am having a difficult time focusing. I find myself blanking out from time to time. Rather than focusing on conveying the message, I get caught up on looking for just the right word or phrase. Recently, my family members were quite ill and so I found myself becoming quite inconsistent with the practice. Fortunately, they are recovering nicely.

As you mentioned a tremendous amount of medical terminology can be quite overwhelming. I need help prioritizing the vocabulary. I am looking forward to creating a plan and a practice schedule.

    1. Welcome Anita! Congrats on passing your written test. Yes as an interpreter your short term memory and ability to focus on the message being communicated are just as important as the language skill itself. We’re excited to help you narrow your focus in your studies, practice and learning plan. See you online!

  117. Ilene K Graebner

I’m new to the Masterclass. I’ve taken some medical spanish classes before but still have never had actual conversation with others as it’s always been online classes. I’m currently looking for work as a medical records clerk in the Los Angeles area.

  118. Super excited to brush up on my Spanish. I was fluent 20 years ago, but lost it because I never used it again. I am so looking forward to this. Thank you!

  119. Hi, I’m a native Spanish speaker working as a registered nurse in labor and delivery. I communicate with my patients just fine, I just want to learn actual medical terms as I don’t know many medical terms in Spanish. Hope to add to my Spanish vocabulary and be able to better communicate with my patients about their care.

    1. Bienvenida Lucy! Great work already meeting your patients in their native Spanish. This Masterclass will be packed full of specific Medical Spanish vocabulary. Hasta pronto en the Masterclass!

  120. I am interested in learning Spanish especially for the medical profession. I am an RN practicing at bedside. This is actually one of my goals for 2021. However i am currently working nights. I see that most of your life sessions are in the evening which I wouldn’t be able to make. Is it possible to still complete this course successfully if I cannot participate in the live practices? Also I am a little uncomfortable with “practice with your friend”. If both of us are learning don’t we need someone with experience to help with correct pronunciation?

    1. Hi Kathleen, welcome to the Masterclass! Yes you can work through the lesson content and see the live practice session replays if you’re working during the live sessions.

A quick note about practicing outside of class (unsupervised) when it comes to pronunciation, grammar, etc. Our goal for you is “functional fluency” in Spanish. One of the Functional Fluency principles is that close enough is good enough for meaningful communication to happen. So, while you always want to be improving with your next steps, we wouldn’t want perfection to get in the way of progress. See you online :).

      1. RN (4 months until I complete my FNP) working at a surgery center here. Just hoping to gain some vocabulary to help with patient interviews.

  121. Thank you for this! Also it was impossible to make it at the live time but it looks like you have recorded sessions! Awesome!

  122. I would like to be able to converse with patients in Spanish, to make them feel more comfortable.

    Conversational Spanish

    1. Hi, I’m an icu nurse in Florida and I frequently come across many patients that are Spanish speaking only. Because majority of them are usually sedated and inubated, I’d like to be able to give them simple phrases as far as what I’m doing or asking them to do. I’d also like to be able to provide their families with updates instead of always searching for an interpreter. I was born here in Florida and have always wanted to learn Spanish, I plan to continue on learning after this class.

      1. Alexandra MacPhee

Bienvenida Jasmin! It sounds like you have a great motivation to improve your Spanish. This will be the perfect way to start!

    1. Good morning Beatrice… the asynchronous (not live) lessons open up early morning and you can work through them at your convenience. The most important thing to schedule in your calendar are the synchronous (live) practice sessions in the evenings. See you online!

  123. Hi,
Thank you for your time and offering this class for free. am willing to put in the time however, I am unable to attend some of the days because i will be at work. Will these classes be recorded that I may view them at a later time?

    1. Hey Clarice, thanks for the note! Yes the lessons themselves are recorded so that you can view them any time. The live practice sessions will be recorded as well for your review if you have to miss. See you online!
