Hispanic Heritage Month and Latin American Independence are more connected than you might think!

The month of September marks an important month for several Latin American countries as they celebrate their independence. In fact, so important that the year 1968 marked the first observation of Hispanic Heritage Week under the United States president Lyndon B. Johnson. In 1988 president Ronald Reagan extended this observation from a week to a month.
Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated from September 15th to October 15th. And while it first became an annual tribute to celebrate the incredible contributions, histories and cultures of United States Citizens whose ancestors came from Mexico, Latin America and Spain, one cannot forget that this month is historically linked to independence day celebrations and other important holidays that weave together to create a rich and dynamic history. September 15th is a significant day as it is the anniversary of independence for Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico, Chile and Belize celebrate their independence days on September 16th, 18th and 21st respectively. Hispanic Heritage Month concludes with the controversial holiday of Día de la Raza on October 15th. This month is a time for Hispanics to remember their history, acknowledge the sacrifice and compromise it took to gain their independence and celebrate their rich and diverse origins.
