Environmental Science 101 Course Description (4 Cr):

Introduces the student to the basic concepts of ecology and the relationship between environmental problems and biological systems. Includes discussions on biology, chemistry, geology, energy, natural resources, pollution, and environmental protection. Using a holistic approach, students will study how the foundations of natural sciences interconnect with the environment. This course is one of the Statewide Guaranteed Transfer courses. GT-SC1.

Student Learning Outcomes, Competencies, and Skills:

  • Define environment, environmental science, and ecology.
  • Discuss the stages of environmental conservation.
  • Describe the scientific method of inquiry.
  • Define and explain how the laws of thermodynamics regulate ecosystems.
  • Summarize the ecological significance of trophic levels and succession.
  • Describe the components and characteristics of terrestrial and aquatic biomes.
  • Summarize the principles of toxicology and risk assessment.
  • Analyze how soil characteristics influence soil erosion and degradation.

Spanish 100 or 200 Course Description (Spa 111, 112 – 5cr; Spa 211, 212 – 3cr):

Students will take Spanish classes 4hrs/day Monday – Friday in Spanish immersion classes. These courses will count for 100 or 200 level Spanish classes depending on which class they are placed in. Class placements are based on oral and written placement tests upon arrival.

Explore Costa Rica and learn about its commitment to eco-tourism with eight field trips designed to highlight the environmental issues faced by Costa Rica. Possible field trips include:

  • Ministerio de Salud
  • Sistema Nacional de Áreas de Conservación
  • Braulio Carrillo National Park
  • Manuel Antonio National Park
  • Poas Volcano National Park
  • Organic Farm
