Why Learn Spanish in Chilean Patagonia?
Most Spanish immersion programs put you in a classroom. CGI’s Chilean Patagonia week does something different: it takes you into one of the most spectacular landscapes on Earth and makes Spanish the language of every conversation, every hike, and every meal. Torres del Paine National Park is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve at the southern tip of South America — jagged granite towers, electric-blue glaciers, guanaco herds, and skies that change every hour. When your classroom is this beautiful, showing up is easy.
Chilean Spanish has its own cadence — faster and more clipped than the Spanish you might have studied in school, with local slang (“chilenismos”) that will surprise you at first and delight you once you crack them. CGI’s local guides know how to pace their language for learners while keeping it authentic. By the end of the week, you’ll have developed an ear for a new accent, a stockpile of outdoor and nature vocabulary, and the rare confidence that comes from communicating in another language while genuinely in the middle of something hard.
The Traveling Spanish Classroom
There are no desks in Chilean Patagonia. Instead, your Spanish instruction happens on the trail, at the dinner table, on the boat crossing Grey Lake, and around the fire after a long day of hiking. CGI’s approach in Chile is built on the principle that language lives in context — and there’s no better context than being genuinely out in the world, needing to communicate to get things done.
Local Patagonian guides lead every excursion in Spanish. CGI staff facilitate vocabulary check-ins, language games, and structured conversation during mealtimes. At the end of each day, brief reflection sessions help you consolidate what you picked up on the trail. It’s immersive in the most literal sense: the language surrounds you because your life, for that week, is conducted in it.
What’s Included in the Chile Week
Torres del Paine: A UNESCO Biosphere Reserve
Torres del Paine National Park sits at the southern tip of Chilean Patagonia, just north of the Strait of Magellan. It was designated a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 1978 and is widely considered one of the most spectacular natural landscapes in the world. The park takes its name from the three granite towers — the “Torres” — that rise 2,800 meters above sea level and are visible from dozens of kilometers away.
The park encompasses over 700,000 acres of glaciers, lakes, rivers, mountains, and steppe. Wildlife is abundant and largely unafraid of humans: guanacos (South American relatives of the llama) graze at the trail’s edge; condors circle the towers; pumas occasionally appear at dusk. The Grey Glacier, accessible by boat across Grey Lake, is one of the most dramatic natural features on the continent — a wall of blue ice over 30 meters high at its face.
For a Spanish learner, the park is both backdrop and teacher. The vocabulary of nature — glaciares, cóndores, guanacos, senderos, miradores — becomes second nature when you’re surrounded by the things the words describe. By the end of the week, you’ll have an experiential vocabulary that no textbook could give you.

Base Torres Hike
The park’s signature trail — 10 miles round trip to the base of the iconic granite towers. Challenging but achievable for fit hikers. Conducted entirely in Spanish with a local guide who knows the trail’s ecology, geology, and legends.
Grey Glacier Boat Tour
A boat crossing of Grey Lake to the face of the Grey Glacier — 30+ meters of ancient blue ice. The guides narrate the glacier’s formation, retreat, and ecology in Spanish. One of the most visually stunning experiences in Patagonia.
Horseback Riding
Ride through open steppe with Patagonian horses and a local huaso (Chilean cowboy) guide. The vocabulary of horsemanship and gaucho culture in Chilean Spanish is unlike anything you’ll find in a classroom — earthy, precise, and deeply traditional.
Chile as Part of the Full Wine & Patagonia Program
The Chilean Patagonia week is the second half of CGI’s two-part Luxury Wine & Patagonia Spanish Immersion program. The first week takes place in Mendoza, Argentina — a city-based immersion with host family living, structured language classes, and cultural experiences including a Malbec bodega visit and mate tea class.
The 2027 program runs in March, with pricing at approximately $16,950 for the full two-week experience. Participants who do both weeks arrive in Patagonia with a week of structured Spanish already in their legs — and leave with two radically different immersion experiences under their belt.
