This Medical Spanish Video Viernes lesson focuses on explaining the Body Parts and how to use 31 Medical Spanish Prepositions.

Also, at the end of the post, you should find other prepositions you could find useful. They are not so common as those ones I explained in the video but you could find them in written texts or some particular contexts such as sports or news.

There are various types of prepositions: time, place, direction and many others. Today we are going to learn some of them you can use when talking about body parts in Spanish.

Common Prepositions in Spanish / Preposiciones comunes en español

1. A: at, to

  • Las arterias llevan sangre oxigenada al cuerpo 

Note: “al” is the contraction of “a” and “el”.

2. A eso de: at about (time)

  • Le damos el alta a eso de las 11 de la mañana

3. A pesar de: in spite of

  • La irritación del pañal puede ocurrir a pesar de una buena higiene 

4. A tiempo: on time

  • Es importante llegar a tiempo a su cita médica

5. A través de: across, through

  • Algunas enfermedades se transmiten al bebé a través de la leche materna

6. Acerca de, sobre: about

  • Voy a hacerle unas preguntas acerca de su historia clínica

7. Además de: besides

  • Además de migrañas, ¿Padece de algo más?

Note: the expression “amén de” also means “además de”. It is good for you to know that since some Spanish speakers (maybe an elder person) could use it.

  • Example: Me dijeron que usted amén de ser buen médico es muy amable

8. Alrededor de: around

  • El pericardio es una membrana alrededor del corazón

Note: “del” is the contraction of “de” and “el”.

9. Antes de: before

  • Necesitamos hacerle un análisis de sangre antes de recetarle un antibiótico

10. Atrás, detrás de: behind

  • El corazón está detrás del esternón 

Note: the preposition “tras” also means “behind”, but in some cases it could means “after”.

  • El baño está tras aquella puerta ( The bathroom is behind that door)
  • Tras hacer este examen, decidiremos el procedimiento a realizar (After doing this exam, we will decide the procedure to be performed)

11. Bajo, debajo de: under, underneath

  • La vesícula biliar está debajo del hígado

12. Cerca de: near, close to

  • El páncreas está muy cerca del estómago

13. Con: with

  • Las infecciones virales no se curan con antibióticos 

14. Contra: against

  • Es importante vacunarse contra la influenza

15. De: from/of

  • La comida pasa de la boca, a través de la garganta, al estómago

16. Dentro de: inside, within

  • Todos los óvulos (huevos) están dentro de los ovarios

17. Desde: since

  • Tenemos antirretrovirales desde 1987

18. Después de: after

  • Tomamos una decisión después del análisis de sangre 

19. Durante: during

  • Es importante no mover durante el IRM

20. En: in, at, on

  • Hay células anormales en la muestra de tejido

21. En lugar de, en vez de: instead of

  • En este caso recomendamos terapia física en lugar de cirugía

22. Encima de, sobre: on top of, above

  • En la piel, la epidermis está encima de la dermis 

23. Enfrente de, delante de: in front of

  • Los intestinos están en frente de los riñones

24. Entre: between

  • La dermis está entre la epidermis y la hipodermis

25. Fuera de: outside of

  • La piel mantiene las bacterias fuera del cuerpo

26. Hacia: toward

  • Muévase hacia mí, por favor

27. Hasta: until

  • Necesitamos esperar hasta recibir los resultados

28. Junto a: beside

  • Los pulmones están junto al corazón

29. Lejos (de): far from

  • El baño no está lejos, está cerca
  • El consulado está lejos del centro

30. Según: according to

  • Según los expertos…

31. Sin: without

  • Sin tratamiento, esta infección puede llegar a ser grave 

Other Interesting Prepositions / Otras preposiciones interesantes

1. Mediante: through, via or by

  • El tumor fue extraído mediante cirugía (The tumor was removed by surgery)
  • Le contactaremos mediante e-mail (We will contact you via email)
  • Las entrevistas las realizaremos mediante videollamadas (The interviews will be done through video calls)

2. So: under. This is an old preposition and, to be honest, nowadays you only could find it in written texts such as newspapers, novels. etc. Nevertheless, be careful and avoid to use it as we use “so” in English language 🙂

  • So pretexto de estar enfermo, él no fue a clase (Under the pretext of being sick, he did not go to class)

3. Versus: against. This preposition is frequently used in sports contexts.

  • Francia versus Croacia, ¿Quién ganará la Copa del Mundo? (France versus Croatia, who will win the World Cup?)

4. Vía: via. It means going through or using a certain way or method to do something.

  • El vuelo va a Colombia vía (going through) Lima (The flight goes to Colombia via Lima)
  • El marketing vía (using a certain method) correo electrónico es muy efectivo (Marketing via email is very effective)

Note: When “vía” is followed by an adjective, you should prepend the preposition “por”:

  • El rescate se realizó por vía aérea (The rescue was carried out by air)
  • La entrevista la haremos por vía telefónica (The interview will be done by telephone)
