Preterite Tense Spanish Verbs

The preterite is used for past actions viewed as completed, over or accomplished. Here are the regular, stem-changing and irregular conjugation patterns — with videos and a free cheat sheet.

Regular Verbs

Drop the infinitive ending (-ar, -er, -ir) and add the following endings.
-ar-er-ir
comprar – to buyvender – to sellvivir – to live

Stem-Changing Verbs

Present-tense stem changers do not change the same way in the preterite. Only -ir verbs change in the él/ella/Ud. and ellos/ellas/Uds. forms.
e > io > u
pedir – to ask fordormir – to sleep
pedípedimosdormídormimos
pedistepedisteisdormistedormisteis
pidiópidierondurmiódurmieron
e > i – conseguir, divertirse, mentir, pedir, preferir, repetir, seguir, servir
o > u – dormir, morir

Irregular Third-Person Verbs

Verbs with a vowel before the -er / -ir ending change -ió and -ieron to -yó and -yeron. The other endings stay the same.

Irregular Stems

These verbs change their stem in the preterite. Note the endings also differ from the regular preterite endings.

Fully Irregular Verbs

These verbs follow no pattern. Note that ser and ir are identical in the preterite.
