December is finally here! Whether you celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, or Winter Solstice, the holidays often share some commonalities; the spirit of unity, personal reflection, tradition and more!
The holidays are a time of celebration to reflect on the successes and challenges of the past year and to prepare for the upcoming year. It is a time of nostalgia and also of reconciliation. This year, traditions may need to be rethought to fit the current global situation. But the spirit of joy, unity, reflection, family and new beginnings can still be integral to our celebrations.
¡Finalmente diciembre está aquí! Ya sea que celebres la Navidad, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, o el Solsticio de Invierno, las fiestas decembrinas comparten similitudes; el espíritu de unidad, reflexión personal y tradición.
Por lo general, las fiestas de fin de año son una época de celebración para reflexionar sobre los éxitos y desafíos del año que termina, y prepararse para el año siguiente. Es un tiempo de nostalgia y también de reconciliación. | Leslie: Hey Rory, what are some of your favorite holiday traditions? Rory: I have two favorite traditions. One of them is a food item and the other is an activity. Leslie: Ok, tell me! Rory: One of my favorite activities is going into the forest with the family, and we’ll take our backpacks, pack hot chocolate, snacks and a saw. It’s usually snowy outside and we’ll go search for a Christmas tree. We’ll cut it down and then we bring it back home and it’s a fun family day! Leslie: Who decorates the tree when you get it home? Rory: Usually the whole family does, but decorating it is not my favorite 😃. Leslie: Do you have another tradition you want to tell me about? Rory: I do! My other one is food. Every Christmas morning our family tradition is to have eggs benedict for brunch. So I’ll make the hollandaise sauce and put it all together and it’s a tradition that I love because we don’t go out to eat breakfast often and this is a really good recipe. Rory: What about you Leslie, What is one of your favorite holiday traditions? Leslie: One of my favorite holiday traditions began when I was a little girl. I grew up in a small town and early in December my grandmother, my mother and I would drive to Denver and watch the Colorado Ballet perform the Nutcracker. Weeks before the date, we would go shopping for a christmas dress to wear. On the day of, we would wake up early and drive to downtown Denver and go to brunch together and later watch this magical ballet. Rory: What about this makes it special? Leslie: It’s a special tradition because my grandmother and mother went before I was born and now my mother, my daughters and I still do this. It’s an opportunity for 3 generations to come together and kick off the holiday by watching the beautiful ballet and listening to the live orquestra. | Stephanie: Creo que una de mis celebraciones favoritas de estas fechas es el día de reyes, el cual se celebra el 6 de Enero. ¿Y cuál es la tuya Pepe? Pepe: Yo creo que mi favorita es la nochevieja. Stephanie: Sí, ¿la que se celebra el 31 de Diciembre verdad? También conocida como la fiesta de fin de año. Pepe: Sí, me gusta mucho porque la intención de esa fiesta es tener la mejor disposición, para atraer y mejorar varios aspectos esenciales como la salud, el dinero, el amor, y tener éxito en los proyectos por realizar. Stephanie: Yo también creo que es una celebración interesante, creo que hay algunas costumbres que se hacen durante esa víspera de año nuevo, ¿no? Pepe: Sí, ese día a la media noche se come una uva cada tres segundos o una por cada campanada que da el reloj a las 12 de la noche, y con cada uva se acostumbra pedir un deseo o ponerte una meta. Pepe: Y a ti, ¿por qué te gusta la celebración de los Reyes Magos? Stephanie: Me gusta porque desde niños acostumbramos a comer la rosca de reyes, que es un pan dulce con frutos secos y membrillo, tiene un sabor delicioso a naranja, vainilla y mantequilla. Además algo muy emocionante es ver a quién le toca el muñequito o monito, hay algunos monitos de plástico colocados al azar por toda la rosca, dependiendo del tamaño del pan pueden ser desde un par de monitos, hasta 7 o 10. Pepe: Sí, recuerdo que alguna vez me salió el monito en una rebanada, tengo entendido que es como un honor que te salga el monito. Stephanie: Así es, pues simboliza al niño Jesús escondido entre la rosca, como cuando José y María lo escondieron de Herodes para protegerlo, entonces el que te salga el monito significa que has sido seleccionado como padrino de Jesús para que puedas tener la responsabilidad de hacer el festejo. Pepe: Estoy de acuerdo contigo, creo que es una celebración divertida. |
