Los Mandatos – Commands

Mandatos | Tú Negativo

Uso = When you have to tell your students NOT to do something

1. Put the verb in the present tense Yo form
Ejemplo: Hablar —> Yo hablo I speak
2. Drop the -O
Ejemplo: Habl
3. Add the following endings:
-AR verbs: add an -es = Ejemplo: No hables Don’t speak
-ER / -IR verbs: add -as = Ejemplo: No escribas Don’t write

Ejemplos

 Don’t hit No pegar No pegues
 Don’t cut in line No cortar la fila No cortes la fila 
 No running in the halls No correr en los
pasillos
No corras en los pasillos 
 Don’t leave the class
without permission
 No salir sin permiso No salgas sin permiso 
 Don’t scream  No gritar No grites 
 Don’t copy  No copiar No copies 
 Don’t say lies  No decir
mentiras
No digas mentiras 
 Don’t do that  No hacer No hagas… 
 Don’t leave  No salir No salgas 
 Don’t touch  No tocar No toques 
 Don’t play  No jugar No juegues 

Verbs ending in -CAR, -GAR, -ZAR

These verbs require spelling changes in order preserve pronunciation

CAR: C changes to QU
tocar – no toques Don’t touch
GAR: G changes to GU
llegar – no llegues Don’t come
ZAR: Z changes to C
Empezar – no empieces Don’t start

Los Mandatos – Irregulares tú negativos

Dar – to give Yo doy No des 
Estar – to be Yo estoy No estés 
ser – to be Yo soy No seas 
Ir – to go Yo voy No vayas 

Mandatos con pronombres

Affirmative commands
pronouns—> end of the verb
Negative commands
pronouns—> before the verb
Ponlo = put it on No lo pongas = don’t put that on
Hazlo = do it No lo hagas = don’t do it
Siéntate = sit down No te sientes = Don’t sit down
Levántate = get up / stand up No te levantes = don’t stand up / get up

Práctica

1. Could you please tell Celia to not curse in class?
No decir groserías = No digas…
2. Velma keeps writing on her desk, could you tell her to stop?
No escribir en el escritorio = No escribas…
3. The groups are so loud. Could you tell them not to shout?
No gritar = No griten…
4. Esteban is throwing pencils. Please tell him not to.
No tirar los lápices = No tires…
5. Tell a little boy not to kick his classmates.
No patear los otros = No patees…
6. Tell the group of boys to stop fighting.
No pelear(se) = No se peleen…
7. Federico pushes in line. Can you please tell him not to do that?
No empujar en la fila = No empujes…
