Uso Especial #1 – Cambios en la norma

Unos ejemplos:

Estar guapo / Estar bonita:  Be handsome / Be beautiful
•“Rory, estás muy guapo esta noche” “Rory, you are very handsome tonight”
•“Y tú mi amor – estás muy bonita” “And you my love, you are very pretty”
Estar delgado / grande / gordo: Be thin / big / fat:
•Mi abuelita tiene mucha nausea, no puede comer. Está muy delgada.  My grandmother has a lot of nausea, she can not eat. She is very thin 
•¡Híjole – qué grandes están los niños! Wow – how big are the children! 
Estar fuerte / débil: Be strong / weak
•Que bueno va su rehabilitación – ¡está muy fuerte!   How good is your rehabilitation – You’re very strong!

Uso Especial #2 – Signos Vitales

Para comunicar resultados, usamos “está en…”

• Hoy su presión está en 120/80 Today your pressure is  120/80
Su hijo no tiene fiebre, su temperatura está en 98.9 grados  Your child does not have a fever, his temperature is at 98.9 degrees
•El pulso (la frecuencia cardíaca) es normal, está en 60 latidos por minuto  The pulse (heart rate) is normal, it is 60 beats per minute

Uso Especial #3 – Expresiones Idiomáticas

Estar a punto de To be about to
•Su apéndice está a punto de romper por la inflamación.  Your appendix is about to break down due to inflammation
Estar apurado To be in a hurry
•Cuando yo estoy muy apurado, se me olvida abrochar el cinturón. When I’m in a hurry, I forget to buckle up.
Estar de acuerdo / estar conforme con To be in agreement with
•Todos estamos de acuerdo con las recomendaciones del especialista.  We all agree with the specialist’s recommendations.
Estar de buen/mal humor To be in a good / bad mood
•Es difícil estar de buen humor cuando sufre de esta enfermedad terrible It is difficult be fine in a good mood when suffering from this terrible disease

Más Expresiones Idiomáticas

Estar de vuelta To be back 
• El doctor está con otros pacientes ahora. Él va a estar de vuelta en la tarde The doctor is with other patients now. He will be back in the afternoon
Estar enamorado To be in love
• Ella no puede pensar en otra cosa, está enamorada  She can not think of anything else, she is in love
Estar en buena / mala forma To be in good / bad shape
• Ese muchacho hace mucho ejercicio, por eso está en buena forma That boy does a lot of exercise, that’s why he’s in good shape.
Estar en las nubes / estar de babia To be daydreaming
• Ese estudiante no presta mucha atención – siempre está en las nubes That student does not pay much attention – he’s always in the clouds

El Tiempo

Esta nublado Is cloudy
• No me gusta el tiempo en Seattle durante el invierno, está nublado todos los días.  I don’t like the Seattle’s weather during the winter, it’s cloudy every day
Está despejado It is clear
•Me encanta el tiempo en Colorado está despejado casi todos los días. I love the Colorado’s weather, it’s clear almost every day.

“Estar caliente”: Be hot
No hay problema con objetos No problem with objects
• ¡Cuidado! la cocina está caliente  Watch out! the kitchen is hot
• Creo que tiene fiebre, la frente está muy caliente  I think he has a fever, his/her forehead is very hot
Hay problema con personas There are problems with people
• Yo estoy caliente = I’m horny (or angry)
• ¿Estás caliente? ¿Tiene calor? Is it hot?
Estar bueno/a:
No hay problema con comidas, experiencias, etc. No problem with meals, experiences
• Muchísimas gracias, los tamales están buenísimos  Thank you very much, the tamales are delicious
Hay problema con personas There are problems with people
• Ella está buena = she’s hot
