This medical Spanish lesson focuses on talking about fall prevention in Spanish, both at home and at the hospital. We share some vocabulary and phrases to talk about the most common rules the patient needs to follow to avoid accidents when he or she tries to stand up or walk around.

Some vocabulary to remember:

  • Equilibrio Balance
    • Falta de equilibrio : Lack of balance.
    • Buen equilibrio : Good balance.
  • Caerse To fall (verbo reflexivo).
  • Prevenir : To prevent.

Condiciones o síntomas que contribuyen a las caídas:

  • Mareo : Dizzines.
  • Dolor Pain.
    • Dolor en las articulaciones : Joint pain.
    • Dolor en la espalda : Back pain.
  • Falta de aire Shortness of breath.
  • Hormigueo : Tingling.
  • Falta de sensación : Numbness

Fall Prevention at Home – Prevención de caídas en la casa

  • Movimiento/Ejercicio:
    • Fortalece los músculos : Strengthens muscles.
    • Mejora el equilibrio : Improves balance.
    • Mejora la flexibilidad : Improves flexibility.
  • Llevar zapatos estables : Wear stable shoes
    • No usar tacones : Do not wear heels.
    • No usar zapatillas : Do not wear slipers.
    • No usar suelas resbaladizas : Do not wear slippery soles
    • No andar descalzos : Do not walk barefoot.
    • No andar en calcetines : Do not walk in stockings or socks.
    • Usar zapatos robustos : Wear sturdy shoes.
    • Usar zapatos con suelas antideslizantes : Wear shoes with non-slip soles.
  • Eliminar peligros en la casa : Eliminate hazards in the house
    • Mantener los pasillos libres de : Keep the hallways clear of
      • cajas : Boxes.
      • periódicos : Newspapers
      • cables eléctricos : Electric cables.
      • cosas en el suelo : Things on the floor
    • Mover mesitas : Move small tables/nightstands
    • Limpiar líquidos derramados : Clean up spilled liquids
  • Iluminar bien la casa : Illuminate well the house
    • Usar luz de noche : Use a nightlight.
      • en los dormitorios : in the bedrooms.
      • en los baños : in the bathrooms.
      • en los pasillos : in the hallways.
    • Poner una luz en la mesita de noche : Put a light on the nightstand.
      • Prender/encender la luz antes de caminar : Turn on the light before walking.
  • Usar aparatos de apoyo : Use supportive devices
    • Usar barandales/pasamanos : Use handrails.
    • Usar asiento de inodoro elevado : Use an elevated toilet seat.
    • Instalar material antideslizante : Install anti-slip material.
    • Usar bastón : Use a cane.
    • Usar andador : Use a walker.

Fall Prevention at the Hospital – Prevención de caídas en el hospital

  • Pida ayuda : Ask for help
    • Use el botón el botón de llamada : Use the call button
    • Pida ayuda antes de salir de la cama : Ask for help before getting out of bed
    • Pida ayuda para usar el baño : Ask for help before going to the bathroom
    • Use el bastón/andador : Use a cane/walker
  • Pida un acompañante para que no esté solo : Ask for a companion to not be alone
    • Un pariente: A family member.
    • Un amigo: A friend
  • Use anteojos (si tiene) : Use your glasses (if you have to)
    • No olvide usar los anteojos : Do not forget to wear your glasses
  •  Pasos específicos (además del botón de llamada): Specific steps (besides the call button)
    • Evite movimientos rápidos : Avoid quick movements
      • cambiar de posición : To change positions
      • salir de la cama : To get out of bed
      • pararse : to stand
    • Use zapatos : Wear shoes
      • zapatos fuertes con una suela de goma : sturdy shoes with rubber soles:
    • Caminos despejados : Clear walkways
    • Siéntese si siente falta de equilibrio : Sit down if you feel unbalanced
