What Is a Transition Word? – ¿Qué es una palabra de transición?

Las palabras de transición ayudan a enlazar ideas en el lenguaje hablado y escrito para una mejor comprensión de lo que se dice.

Transition words help to link ideas in spoken and written language for a better understanding of what is being said.

Se usan para / They are used for:

  • Introducir ideas / Introduce ideas
  • Agregar información / Adding information
  • Apoyar un argumento / Supporting an argument
  • Presentar un punto contrario / Raising an objection
  • Evaluar / Evaluating
  • Conectar ideas parecidas / Linking similar ideas
  • Concluir / Adding a conclusion

Transition Words and Examples – Group #1

Here are some transition words in Spanish you can use in the clinical setting with examples:

Antes de (que) before

Examples:

  • Las verduras son nutritivas, además son económicas: Vegetables are nutritious, moreover they are economical.
  • Algunas veces podemos controlar la presión completamente con cambios al estilo de vida: Sometimes we can control blood pressure completely with lifestyle changes.
  • Hay alrededor de 4 tipos de la bacteria estreptococo: There are around 4 types of strep bacteria.
  • Al contrario de lo que se creía, el período de incubación del Coronavirus puede ser de hasta 24 días: Contrary to what was believed, the incubation period of the Coronavirus can be up to 24 days
  • La natación puede ayudar a mejorar su estado físico y su respiración al mismo tiempo: Swimming can help improve your fitness and breathing at the same time.
  • Los resultados de los exámenes estarán disponibles antes de las 5:00 PM: Test results will be available before 5:00 PM.

  • Por un lado, los condones ayudan a evitar embarazos y, por el otro lado, previenen enfermedades de transmisión sexual: On the one hand, condoms help prevent pregnancy, and on the other hand, they prevent sexually transmitted diseases.

  • Es importante llevar un control anual de su salud, sobre todo después de los 40 años: It is important to have an annual control of your health, especially after the age of 40
